Johnston's Jottings
Instructor: Mrs. Johnston
Language Arts: This week (Jan.23-27), in grammar, we are continuing to learn about possessive pronouns and exclamatory sentences.   In spelling, we are learning to spell words with inflectional endings -s and -es.  Your child will take a pretest every Monday and the post test every Friday.  A spelling list will come home every Tuesday for you and your child to practice throughout the week.

Reader's Workshop: This is my whole group reading instruction that focuses on a specific skill/concept each week.  This week (Jan.23-27) will be learning about literal and non-literal meanings, known as idioms (ex. taking steps).  We will also be at character traits in various read aloud books.  I also do guided reading in my classroom.  Your child will get to read many new books this year, but with specific reading skills for each group.

Math: We use the Sharon Wells Math program.  This is a very extensive problem solving and manipulative based curriculum.  Each day we will spend time with basic facts, problem solving, and a specific concept for the week.  This week (Jan.23-27) we will be learning about multiplication.  Your child will be responsible for knowing how to multiply through problem solving.  Also, it is very important that your child know their addition/subtraction basic facts.  This week your child will begin taking Minute Math quizzes.  A letter will be sent home this week.  You can help your child practice these each evening using flash cards.

Science/Social Studies:   This week (Jan.23-27) we are are continuing our unit on Matter.  Your child will be participating in activities and experiments that help them understand the 3 states of matter: solids, liquids, and gasses.  This week we are focusing specifically on lliquids.  We also use the Character Counts curriculum, which focuses on a different character trait each 6 weeks.  This 6 weeks we will be spending time learning about Fairness.  In most cases, we will spend one half of the 6 weeks doing Science and the other half doing Social Studies.

About Me: I am beginning my 12th year as a 2nd grade teacher.  I received my teaching degree from Texas Tech in May, 2000.  I received my master's degree in Reading in August, 2007.  I absolutely love my job and working with your child.  I love to read, watch movies, go camping, and spend time with my family (both immediate and extended).  I have been married to my best friend, Robert, for 28 years.  We have two kids: Bobby, 25, and Katie, 22.
Class Announcements
Math
It is absolutely imperative that your child know their addition and subtraction basic facts "off the top of their head" by the end of 2nd grade.  They must know them so they will be able to do multiplication and division in 3rd grade.  You can help your child by practicing them 5-10 minutes each night using flash cards that can be purchased at any dollar store.
Conference Time
My conference time is 11:00-11:50 daily.  Tuesdays and Thursdays are generally not a good time due to grade level meetings and planning.  I am also available after school on Mondays and Wednesdays.  A really good way to communicate with me is through email.  My address is kjohn@lcisd.net.  Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns and I will be happy to visit with you.
READING
Your child is responsible for reading 15-20 minutes 4 nights a week.  This is to be recorded on their Reading Log Sheet and signed by a parent or guardian.  Every Friday they turn those sheets in to be checked if they are doing their homework.  If they are not they will miss 5 minutes of game time for every night missed.  If they are not reading at all it will lead to a folder pull.  It is very important that they practice their reading.
CLOTHING
Your child must wear tennis shoes or shoes with a rubber-type sole to PE.  This is for their safety and participation in the activities planned.  If there is a reason your child cannot participate in PE, we must have the reasons in writing and a copy will be given to the PE teachers.  Our PE days are Mondays and Fridays.  I have asked that your child bring a light jacket and keep at school since I keep my classroom a little cooler than most.
SNACKS
We have snack time everyday around 9:30.  Your child is welcome to bring a snack to school.  My only request concerning this is they bring a healthy snack; nothing with a lot of sugar, such as candy.  Also, there is no need for them to bring a drink since we have a water fountain in the classroom.  I would appreciate your cooperation with this.
